Volume One (currently in print)
Volume one of the Spiritual Exodus series is titled Never Was Happiness. Desire in Recovery. Attention to the psychological, spiritual, relationship, and physical malady we call addiction begins with a litany of its devastating consequences.
The intent of this morbid and menacing litany is neither to judge or condemn, but to stir and harrow up the heart and mind and spirit to repentance. Sometimes “nothing short of ... exceedingly great plainness of speech” (Enos 1:23) will suffice to “awake [the soul] ... to [the] awful reality of these things” (2 Nephi 9:47) and “keep [one] from going down speedily to [the] destruction” (Enos 1:23) of addiction.
The solitary intent and hope guiding this volume is that a more complete depiction, realization, and conviction of “the consequences of sin” (Jacob 9:48) may assist in forging and hammering to tempered determination the desire and will to repent—repent of unchastity, immorality, and addictive appetite in all its forms and degrees and devastation—so that both oneself and loved others may more fully enjoy the blessings that attain to the virtuous life. That sincere purpose alone animates and inspires this difficult volume.
