Volume Seven (not written yet)
The Worth of Souls. Godly Self-Worth in Recovery (Volume Seven) considers the existential meaninglessness flowing from all the worldly counterfeits for self-worth or esteem. The experience of self disappearing amidst the overwhelming vastness of the universe tempts ‘escape from nothingness’ through addiction, which offers a comforting narcissistic fantasy, but ultimately leaves us empty still. Contrasted with these worldly counterfeits is a godly basis for self-worth, which is the only “well of water springing up into everlasting life” (John 4:14).
The spiritual journey to self-worth is anchored in our experience of, and instrumentality in, the pure love of Christ. As we experience the witness of God’s individualized love for us, and then become instruments of that love through saving service, our underlying existential hunger is completely satisfied, and our temptation to addictive escape or other transgressions diminishes.
